Yet for generations throughout Asia, silk has been valued not only as one of the world's most treasured natural fibers, but also as an ingredient in traditional beauty rituals. The Birth of Silk

According to Chinese tradition, silk was discovered around 2700 BC when Empress Leizu noticed a silkworm cocoon unraveling into an impossibly fine thread after falling into her tea. Whether legend or history, silk quickly became one of the ancient world's most valuable commodities.

For centuries, the methods of silk production remained one of China's greatest secrets. The demand for this remarkable fiber eventually gave rise to one of history's most important trade routes - the Silk Road - which stretched thousands of miles from China through Central Asia and into Europe. Along this network traveled not only silk, but ideas, medicines, spices, art, religions, and cultures that shaped civilizations.Today, silk remains one of the most luxurious natural fibers on Earth.

What Makes Tussah Silk Different?

Unlike traditional mulberry silk, Tussah Silk is produced by wild silkworms that feed naturally on oak and other forest trees. Because the silkworms live in their natural environment, Tussah Silk develops a slightly stronger fiber with a beautiful natural ivory color and distinctive texture. It has been prized for centuries for both its beauty and durability. At Southern Luxe Savon, we selected Tussah Silk because its natural protein fibers contribute to the luxurious character of our handcrafted soaps.

A Discovery in Taiwan

The inspiration for using Tussah Silk came from an unforgettable journey. While traveling in Taiwan with her husband, our founder discovered handcrafted silk soap unlike anything she had experienced before. The rich, creamy lather and incredibly smooth feel immediately stood apart from ordinary soap.

Curious to learn more, she spent time studying the traditional techniques used by local soap artisans and discovered how silk had been incorporated into handcrafted soap for generations. She learned not only how silk is added to soap, but also why it had become such a treasured ingredient in Asian soapmaking.

She knew she wanted to bring this extraordinary tradition - and the luxurious experience of silk soap - back to the United States. Today, Tussah Silk remains one of the signature ingredients found throughout many Southern Luxe Savon collections.

How Silk Is Added to Soap

One of the most fascinating aspects of silk soap is that the silk itself disappears during the soapmaking process. Very fine strands of Tussah Silk are added to the freshly melted soap ingredients. As the solution heats, the silk proteins gradually dissolve until they become completely incorporated into the soap batter.

By the time the soap is poured into molds, there are no visible silk fibers remaining. Instead, the dissolved silk proteins are evenly dispersed throughout the soap. The result is a remarkably smooth batter that contributes to the luxurious character of the finished bar.

What Does Science Say?

Silk is composed primarily of two natural proteins: fibroin and sericin.

Modern biomedical research has explored these proteins for a variety of applications, including wound dressings, tissue engineering, and biomaterials because of their biocompatibility and ability to interact gently with human tissue. Laboratory and clinical studies have also investigated silk-derived proteins for their moisturizing properties and their potential to support the skin's natural barrier, although much of this research has focused on purified silk proteins used in leave-on products rather than rinse-off soaps.
